View Points
■Kurobe Dam
At 1,500 m, Kurobe Dam is the highest arch dam in Japan. The lake behind the dam holds 200 million cubic meters of water. The dam is 186 m tall and 10 cubic meters of water pass through the dam every second generating one billion kWh per year.
■Raicho (Ptarmigan)
These ptarmigan live only in the mountains. They were revered as messengers from god and treated very well. Because of this they are not shy around people. They have survived since the ice age. The birds are designated as a Special National Treasure. About 240 birds live in the Murodo area. If you are lucky, you might see one. From May to June it is especially easy to spot brown Raicho silhouetted on the remaining snow.
Clothes
■Spring: April to June
While it is spring at altitudes of around 1,000 meters, places at altitudes of 1,500 meters or higher are still covered with snow. For clothes, we recommend wearing a slip-on sweater, pants, and hiking boots. A cap and sunglasses are musts as the reflected light from the snow-covered ground is strong.
■Summer: July to August
This is the best season to fully savor nature. You can enjoy alpine plants and strolling. For clothes, bring a hat with a wide brim to block the sun.
■Autumn: September to October
Autumnal tints gradually go down along the ridge line to the bottom. For clothes, wear a warm jacket, thick pants, and a breathable cap.
